A Computer Aided Draughtsman is the person who works in conjunction with an Engineer or Architect to create and conceptualize drawings using specific computer drawing software, for structural steel, buildings, mechanical or other detailed technical plans or drawings.

This 2 year course is aimed at learners who have passed Matric with the minimum requirements to be accepted for a Certificate programme, and wish to qualify with not only a SAQA registered qualification, but also an International certification in designing and preparing computer generated technical drawings and 3D visuals for architects, engineers and manufacturers.

Earning this Certificate will qualify the learner for jobs such as a CAD Operator, Computer Aided Designer or AutoCAD Draughtsperson.*

MODULES

2 Credits

This module focuses on introducing and developing students’ business computing skills and their understanding of computing in a business environment.

Business computing skills covered in the course relate to spreadsheets, word processing, search techniques and the use of computers as a presentation medium, using the Windows Operating Systems and Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

12 Credits

This module will give the learners an understanding of types of businesses, entrepreneurship, organisational procedures and business plans within the South African Computer Aided Draughting sector.

The Module will also cover professional presentation and communication.

14 Credits

The aim of this module is to introduce learners to the Drawing Office in terms of Organograms, job roles, maintaining occupational health, safety and general house-keeping, with the goal of the student being able to demonstrate an understanding of drawing office practice.

15 Credits

The aim of this module is to introduce learners to the everyday computer programmes used by Draftsman to plan and produce two dimensional (2D) Computer Aided Drawings (CAD). This will include products from the Autodesk suite.

8 credits

The aim of this module is to introduce learners to the basics of technical drawing and draughting techniques and concepts, by making use of either freehand sketches or made with drawing instruments and transferring them to computer aided drawings.

3 Credits

The aim of this module is to introduce learners to the concepts of Project Management, including the support the project environment and activities to deliver project objectives, as well as planning and scheduling workflow.

15 Credits

This module allows learners time in a workspace to conduct research in order to better understand, make and motivate judgements on situations relevant to the Computer Aided Draughting sector.

18 Credits

This module teaches students to read, interpret and produce working architectural drawings.

12 Credits

This modules teaches learners the importance of communication and presentation techniques, so that they are equipped to write, present and sign texts for a range of communicative contexts.

6 credits

This module will enable learners to set up and prepare a 3D model space and produce a 3D model. The focus will be on drawing for mechanical components.

15 Credits

This module aims to teach learners to prepare detailed plans, drawings and other documents for the manufacture and erection of steel members (columns, beams, braces, trusses, stairs, handrails, joists, metal decking, etc.) used in the construction of buildings, bridges, industrial plants, and non-building structures.

Not For credits

This module aims to teach learners how to design and detail piping components and layouts.

8 Credits

The aim of this module is to introduce learners to fundamental electrical and circuit concepts, to enable then to interpret, read and produce working electrical drawings.

NOT FOR CREDITS

The learners will learn to create and prepare drawings and items for 3D Printing. There will be a trip to a 3D Printing facility to complete a 3D project.
